< Books mentor me. Read Books as Mentors here. God uses words in books to help shape my heart and character to be who He’s created me to be. This list will be added to throughout the year with books I am reading or have read. Though some of the books I list here, I’ve received at no cost to me in return for my review — my review is always honest.
2013 Book List
“I believe everyone has God-sized dreams. It’s not about how big or small they are, because He creates each one to perfectly fit the size of your heart.” –Holley Gerth, You’re Made for a God-Sized Dream
Are you a dreamer? Do you want to be? Oh, my, this book is a must read. The book has already made a powerful difference in me, in the most gentle, loving, graceful way. Holley has a way of conveying her heart so beautifully in words, making us all feel as if we are the most beloved. (Received a copy to review.)
“And in the midst of my cluttered living room — cluttered with toys and laundry and fears — this God who spoke worlds into existence bent down and spoke a word of promise to me…’I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten…You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you.'”– Lara Williams, To Walk or Stay
This is more than a book, it’s a testimony. Lara Williams shares her story of God’s faithfulness and redemption, during and through a most broken, and devastating struggle in her marriage. One that could have easily destroyed her marriage — adultery. Through her words, she offers the power and beauty of God in the midst of suffering and reveals the love of the Redeemer. This book is full of God’s wisdom, His Word and Lara’s personal and profound insight. It’s drawn my heart closer to both God and my husband. (Received a copy to review.)
“Any time you seek to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of people in their personal or professional lives, you take on the role of a leader. When you think about it this way, all of us are leaders in every aspect of life…The truth is, being a parent is probably the most important life-role leadership position you’ll ever have, and it begins when you assume responsibility for raising a child.” — Lead Your Family Like Jesus
Friends, this is just where my heart is right now. Husband and I both have a desire to raise our children like Jesus in order to raise them as followers of Him. This book holds wisdom, practical insight and tools to equip us to do just that. (Received a copy to review.)
“Pure religion, then, is a reflection of God’s love. When we act justly—when we our lives away—we have the best chance of glimpsing what grace truly is and experiencing, along the way, what Jesus calls “complete joy” (see John 15:11)…we are never closer to God than when we are pursuing justice by serving others. No secondary agenda. Just the purity of sacrificial love.” — Ken Wystma, Pursuing Justice
I am just beginning to understand what God means by “do JUSTICE” for this mama. This book has proven to be a message that God is purposing to shape my heart with. I am learning to do JUSTICE, love MERCY, walk HUMBLY and desire to raise children that do the same.
Just what I needed this year. This book is my mentor. John C. Maxwell, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth: Live Them and Reach Your Potential
“The culture we live in confirm their fears by constantly promoting the attitude that women are competitive, slanderous and malicious. We embrace these lies and end up despising our own gender…If we realize the inherent value, and the importance of female friendships, I believe we can take back our God-given name, with all its rights and privileges. Then the word woman can be defined by such words as wise, influential, beautiful, dynamic, purposeful, visionary, authentic, graceful, dignified, merciful, compassionate, life-giving.” Jan Greenwood, Women at War: Bringing Peace to YOurself — And Your Girlfriends Too!
I have been amazed at how God has spoken to my heart through reading this book to my teenage girls. It truly is a book for leaders. Tim Elmore has a gift in saying the most profound truths, packed full of wisdom, and practical insight in a few short words. Love this book!
