I knew when I came to Africa that I wanted to tell the stories of redemption and show the people of Africa, full of hope. We all did. I honestly thought it would be a challenge to see good, amidst a people who have experienced so much, death, destruction and pain.
What I discovered is hope can be found, and where it can’t, it can be given. We give hope by going, by giving, by doing. We are not the source of hope, we are carriers of it. Because of the hope in Christ we have been given we are able to–we are commanded to—bring it to others.
Cyrus Mad-Bondo was one of the leaders on our trip to Uganda and Rwanda. He is World Help’s Chief Strategist for Africa programs, and I heard he was passionate and full of joy for the work that is going on in Africa.
I had no idea how much so, until I met him and heard him tell us stories, teach us about Kingdom work, share testimonies of God’s redemption in his life, and those he’s seen throughout World Help’s mission for Africa.
I wasn’t short on questions, and he wasn’t short on powerful, life-impacting answers for me, answers that would help steer me — with greater focus — toward a life lived on behalf of others.
I asked him, “Do the children dream? The children in the slums, do they know how to dream and hope for a better life?”
His reply, “I grew up in the slums, in poverty. One day, I saw a plane in the sky. I said, one day I’ll be on a plane. It doesn’t seem like much, but to a child living in the slums is seems a near impossible dream. It was just and idea, a glimpse of something better, and now look where I am.”
He speaks of hope. Since then, he’s been on 37 planes.
