Review of A Promise in Pieces by Emily Wierenga

A Promsise In Pieces by Emily Wierenga

A Promise in Pieces by Emily Wierenga is the first fiction book that I have read for my own pleasure in years. I read fiction to my children, but not so much for me. I know and love Emily’s heart, and she’s a friend. We went to Africa with World Help together, and were roommates while we were there.

Emily gave me an advanced copy to of her book to read, so I could review it and then tell you about it. I know her to be a beautiful, poignant writer. I am moved, challenged and stirred by her non-fiction articles and other books she’s written. Now, I can add her debut fiction novel to the list.

I read it on a plane flight home from a retreat, and I remember when I got off the plane I felt different — more alive, somehow. Emily’s words had beautifully woven faith and heartache, life and hope, and God and humanity into a love story, and it moved me deeply.

After I read it, I became more aware of the blessings in my life. Even something as simple as warm water over my hands, while I washed up after the plane flight.

I rode the airport shuttle to where my husband and littlest one would be waiting to pick me up. When I saw my baby girl, joy and gratitude literally came into my heart like a flood. I embraced by her, held her tight and long, and breathed in the moment. Then my affection turned to my husband. I felt so much love, so tangible.

Emily’s words and story awakened parts of my soul that I didn’t even know needed awakening. I think this quote in the book says it best…“Funny, how one can become so aware of God and humanity in the same breath and how knowing one, in fact, feeds the other.”
I suppose this review doesn’t tell you much about what the book is about. Sorry for that. You can click here to reach Emily’s blog and to read the synopsis. Also, listen to her sweet voice tell you the story about her book in the video below.

I was just completely surprise with how her book touched my heart and soul so deeply. That’s what I wanted to tell you about.

I loved every word.
