Review of Love Idol by Jennifer Dukes Lee

In August of 2012, I hosted an interview with Jennifer Dukes Lee on my blog. She is a beautiful writer, and someone I am able to call a precious friend. I count her as a gift. She is kind, warm, and welcoming. She is a lover of God and of people. Read the interview here.

Last Monday she released early her first book, Love Idol: Letting Go of Your Need for Approval – and Seeing Yourself through God’s Eyes by Jennifer Dukes Lee. And, last Monday was when I intended to write this post. It was also the same day my husband left for a trip out of the country, and I came down with the stomach flu. Needless to say, things don’t always go as planned.

Nevertheless, I need to tell you I nearly read the whole book in one sitting. I would recommend it to anyone, especially the one who struggles with low self-worth and needs to know that you are already known, recognized, valued, respected, loved, and pre-approved by God.

We fall from the grace and approval of others, but never from the love of God. #Preapproved

A story is a powerful thing, especially one that is human and vulnerable and real and full of God’s redemption. Jennifer is not only a beautiful story-teller, but honest and genuine as she tells us her own story. She invites us in from the very first page to follow her journey to being rooted and grounded in God’s love.

God has used Jennifer’s words to unveil my own heart struggles, and falsehoods I’ve still believed. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t still working through my own battles — dealing with rejection, the need for approval and validation from people, basing love on performance, and fear of failure because of it. I’m deep in the process of heart-mending that only God’s Spirit can do, mind-renewing that only Truth can do, and soul-delivering that Christ came to do. God is using this book in the process.

God loves the whole world. Love Idol is for everyone who wants to know deep in their hearts and without a shadow of doubt in their minds that they are approved by God no matter how many others have disapproved you — one way or another. We fall from the grace of people and from the approval of other people, but we never fall from the love of God. Nothing can separate us from His love.
